Mitochondrial simple sequence repeat (mtSSR) is a new molecular marker technology developed in recent years. It not only has the advantages of high polymorphism, wide distribution and codominance of SSR markers, but also has the advantages of maternal inheritance and rapid structural evolution of plant mitochondrial genome. It has important applications in population genetic structure, gene flow evolution, species evolution, cytoplasmic genetic characteristics, population classification and other aspects. Based on existing research results both domestically and internationally,the article reviewed the research progress of mtSSR molecular markers on plant population classification and cytoplasm identification, and summarized the plant mtSSR databases,which aimed to provid reference for using mtSSR technology in plant research.
