Food  and environment biosafety derived from the genetically modified (GM) organisms have attracted serious public attention since development of transgenic technology. Toward the severe situation of global food security, governments and scientists from both developed and developing nations are responsible for clarifying to public the nature of transgenic technology and its GM products. In this essay, attempts are made to review the biosafety issues of typical GM crops in terms of food and environment concerns. Technological strategies and management regarding GM crops biosafety are also discussed.
• A Summarized Opinion on Application of Crop Male Sterility in Plant Breeding

This paper summarized the type and genetic characteristics of male sterility. The mechanism of male sterility is involved in cytoplasmic heredity. It has been initially proved that atp6-c and aptA are the cytoplasmic genes of maize sterile line C group and namie male sterile line, respectively. Male sterility hybrids are extensively applied in corp production, shuch as maize, rice and vegetables. Despite some theories were proposed, such as inbreeding theory, DNA methlation and genetics of rice cytoplasm male sterile line, the basic theories of male sterile breeding requests further study. This paper suggested to gradually resolve the difficulties of crop male sterile hybridization breeding in wheat, buckwheat and navy beans.
• Research Progress of Plant Mutagenesis Technology

Plant mutagenesis technology is using external factors to accelerate species variation and acquire some valuable mutants in the short period. This technology has been an important tool for new materials breeding, variety cultivation and gene function research. Compared with the natural selection, plant mutagenesis technology has more advantages, such as a higher mutant frequency, larger mutation range and shorter mutation period. This paper mainly introduces the mutational mechanism and biological effects of chemical, physics, space, biology mutagenesis, and their research progress of applications in plant in detail. Also some disadvantages of these technologies are mentioned and good suggestions for future development are proposed.

Most of characters of biological interest and economic importance are quantitative traits. In traditional quantitative genetics, mathematic statistical methods are used to study multi-gene system controlling quantitative traits as a whole. The advent of DNA marker technology has stimulated the research of molecular quantitative genetics. Since the 1980s, many kinds of statistical analysis for QTL mapping had been developed. They mainly included: single marker mapping, interval mapping and composite interval mapping. At present, many important QTL genes has been cloned, the research of QTL mapping and QTL gene cloning have become a hot research fields.

The completion of human genome seguence declares the entering the proteomics era that concentrates on functional genomics research and concerns on the hot points of proteomics. This paper introduces the principles of the proteomics techniques and reviewes their application in the improvement of wheat quality, including the identification of glutenin subunits, improvement of dough rheological characteristics, the expression and accumulation of gluten protein before immature, effect of high temperate on the gluten strength, analysis of puroindoline a and b related with grain hardness, and studies on starch quality. The disadvantages and the potentials of proteomic technologies in wheat genetic studies are discussed as well.

Gray leaf spot (GLS) is one of the important leaf diseases in maize. The leaf diseases can make the entire maize plant to die when the disease is serious. Gray leaf spot has become one of the major diseases in maize. This paper reviewes the latest progresses of physiology of GLS-resistance and genetic QTL mapping of GLS in maize, and also discusses on how to accelerate the study of GLS and the breeding of disease resistant varieties.

Seed dormancy is that plants initiatively adapt to the adverse environmental conditions during the long time development. This paper introduces the cause seed dormancy,and the types of seed dormaney according to the effects on dormancy and germination; summarizes different methods to release the dormancy of common medicinal plants, and comments current research progress.

Human epidermal growth factor (hEGF)  is an important autocrine/paracrine factor in human body.  hEGF and its receptor regulate key processes of cell biology, including proliferation, differentiation, migration and survival of cells.  hEGF plays an important role in cell develepmnet, wound healing and organogenesis.  This paper summarizes the hEGF synthesis, secretion, biochemical character, molecular structure, family, receptor, signal pathways, bioactivity, physiological function, applications, and the methods of production.

Drought, high salinity, low temperature and other abiotic stress affect plant growth and development seriously. It has important theoretical and practical value to research key genes involved in stresses. A CIPK protein kinase gene, named ZmCIPK10 tentatively, was cloned in this study. The gene is 2 730 bp long in the genome, 2 100 bp of transcript, encoding 438 amino acids. Cis-element analysis identified ABRE, HSE, TC-rich repeats and other stresses core sequence within the promoter region of the ZmCIPK10 gene. Real-time PCR analysis indicated that the expression of ZmCIPK10 was up-regulated under the dehydration, cold and salt treatment and down-regulated under ABA and heat treatment. This study demonstrated maize ZmCIPKK10 gene took part in stresses responses,which would be helpful to further illustrate the function of ZmCIPK10 in maize.

Spores and protoplasts of the original strain Streptomyces avermitilis 76-12 were treated with nitrosoguanidine (NTG), acridine orange, ultraviolet radiation (UV) and LiCl respectively. Then a series of high yield avermectin producing and stable mutants were obtained through mutation and rational selection. The avermection productivity of the mutant N-1-2 was 2.47 times of the original strain. Furthermore, several special mutants were obtained. Mutant strain G-32 produced only “a” avermectins; mutant strain Ave8 had higher lever of avermectin B1a content than original strain; and mutant strain UA-G developed bluegreen spores.
• The Development of a Callus Induction and Plant Regeneration System from Garlic Root

An efficient callus induction and plant regeneration system was developed in four garlic (Allium sativum. L) cultivars from China, using root segments from in vitro plantlets as explants. Cloves were peeled off and sterilized, then germinated in 1/2 MS medium.  Roots from 5~7 d seedlings were inoculated onto different induction media to induce callus. MS media with 2,4-D 1 mg/L and 2ip 0.1 mg/L had the highest callus induction potential,and the average callus induction frequency was 5606 %. During the stage of plant regeneration,embryogenesis callus were prone to generate roots which restrained plant regeneration. MS with KT 1 mg/L had the highest shoot regeneration potential which was 35.01%. This system has potential to be used for garlic transformation.
