Poly-gamma-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) and 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BD) are two important chemicals that can be used in energy, pharmaceuticals and agriculture. The Bacillus licheniformis WX-02 is capable of producing γ-PGA and synthesise 2,3-BD, simultaneously. In this study, the medium for co-production of these two chemicals by B. licheniformis WX-02 was optimized. The pilot scale fermentation was performed in a 50L fermenter. The batch fermentation results showed that the production of γ-PGA and 2,3-BD were achieved as 42.5 g/L and 76.13 g/L, respectively in the optimal medium, which was 26.5% and 188%, respectively increased compared with that before the optimization. The production level for each compound obtained in the co-production system was comparable to that of single compound production system. Collectively, the results laid the foundation for the industrialization of co-production of γ-PGA and 2,3-BD.
